Does the job, but won't last more than a few years
Today our Staywell 280 Big cat flap broke as one of our three cats dived through the door whilst it was locked. The plastic door cracked in half, which is very dangerous as the plastic was sharp and jagged.
It's done an ok job over the past 2 years, but I agree with the other reviews saying it was very difficult to fit. I'm very good with DIY, so if you're not confident then get a professional in to do it.
Overall, I don't know if any other cat flaps on the market are any better so just check out all the reviews!
Poor design
Although this cat flap looks good and comes with a 5 year garuantee, its design is flimsy, difficult to fit and becomes dirty very quickly. The catches used to lock the flap in the closed position are small and our cat continuously breaks through, meaning that the plastic flap is now covered in selotape.
A less than satisfactory product.
OK, but limited
So you've got a patio door, or some other sliding glass arrangement, and haven't any other choice but to put the catflap there. Well, the Staywell 270 will do it for you, but with some limitations.
I've had one of these in my sliding patio door for 6 years. In that time I've had to replace the flap itself three times and the whole unit once (about to do so for the second time). Breakages have been due to a springer spaniel attempting to use it and cracking the flap, and a couple of stray cats being trapped inside the house unexpectedly, and literally head-butting it until it broke and they escaped.
The catflap works fine, as far as it goes, but it's a huge shame that it doesn't come with some of the functionality of other flaps designed for 'normal' doors. You have no ability to stop other cats using the catflap as they please, other than to inconvenience your own cat. There's no collar magnet function, so if you want to stop other cats coming into your house and...
