Firstly I would say that buying this on amazon is probably the fairest deal you will find. Secondly you have to know which one to order; a bit of a puzzle if you have a puppy rather than a known breed as detailed. It seems to me that it would be a likely purchase for a puppy, one being trained to walk safely and under control on the lead. So perhaps the sizing should go more by weight. I chose Small 3-4 as it most resembles the size (Beagle, Fox Terrier, Welsh Corgi) of my 12kg springer spaniel puppy; well, this week anyway!
We quickly got it comfortably adjusted, and happily there is some room for growth, as he is fourteen weeks now, so I hope this might last a month or two. Naturally he tried to bite the front strap and worry at it but as as soon as we set off walking together I could feel it was the right choice, so much more relaxed than him, in his enthusiasm, choking at the end of a lead and collar. We went four miles this morning in companionable mood, never feeling...
OK, but could be better
I bought this harness as I have a rather enthusiastic beagle who goes nose down and just pulls you along to the next smell.
Firstly the Amazon ad does not tell you the sizes, however I did find them elsewhere.
My dog is 73cm on the chest and therefore this should fit her fine, however when adjusted it is still a bit loose on her - the adjustment would be better for a larger dog, say from 80cm upwards on this medium size.
The other problem is you have to get the dogs legs into the harness, well thats a challenge with mine as she is so excited to be going out she wont stay still.
Once the harness is on it works quite well. When she pulls she loses grip on the front paws as the harness tends to lift her body, not her neck. She therefore tends not to pull so much.
Ancol could have made the adjustment so much better by crossing over sizes to ensure you get a btter fit - if they had I would have given a higher mark.
Rubbed my dogs raw!
I bought two of these for my Border Terriers and at first was very pleased with the ease of fitting and the look of the harness, however, after using for a few days my dogs got that they didn't seem to like walking with the harness on and would keep sitting down. It was then that I noticed the harness was rubbing them both raw under the front legs. The harness wasn't done up too tightly as I could slip my finger behind the strap, it's just that it sits too close behind the front legs. I don't know if this is a design fault or whether it just isn't suitable for Border Terriers as they do have legs that go straight down like a cats. I felt awfull that I had been taking them for LONG walks wearing this product which all the time had been rubbing. If you do purchase the harness on the back of the other reviews who clearly do rate this product then I would urge you to check for rubbing on a daily basis so as not to cause any un-nessesary discomfort to your dog
