I've a retriever who pulls like the dickens. Or at least used to. This is a nice long, soft, strong lead and cheaper than 'police dog' things that are exactly the same. I've had it for a few months now and it's been very useful.
What I do is hold one end in your right hand, then trail it over my right shoulder and down to my left side, which is attached to the dog. When the animal then tries to lunge forward, rather than her nearly detaching my arm at the elbow, I just turn my body so my back takes the strain with ease. If she starts to pull, I just stop dead so she stops herself. Then maybe a step backwards so she comes to heel. If she's still focused on something (like another person feeding their dog) I turn my body again and walk towards her so she has to look up to me (and so break her attention elsewhere).
No more yanking on leads. No more ouchy stretched elbow. She's much better at walking to heel now.
